A lemon sour cocktail is the same as a lemon chu-hai.
You must be confused because one alcoholic beverage has two names. According to Suntory's Customer Center, ‘Recipes for the lemon sour cocktail and the lemon chu-hai are almost the same’. Actually, the main difference is that chu-hai is an alcoholic beverage made from shochu and carbonic acid, while a sour cocktail is an alcoholic beverage made from spirits and citrus fruits.
Also, the name 'lemon sour' cocktail seems to have spread throughout the Kanto region of Japan. In the Kansai region, it is often called 'lemon chu-hai'.
However, there are no strict laws that distinguish how chu-hai and sour cocktails are made so consumers just enjoy the lemon sour cocktail boom without any particular concerns.
The boom of lemon sour cocktail arrived several years ago
In Japan, the boom of the lemon sour cocktail has arrived. Every year, a 'Lemon Sour Festival' has been held in Hokkaido, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka since 2017.
It is said that the boom started with a popular Japanese dance vocal group. They are big fans of the lemon sour cocktail and remarkably 15 members of this group drank 2,500 glasses in one night. After this story was broadcast on TV, it became a hot topic on the internet very quickly. And it is said that many people knew about lemon sour cocktails more than before. Now, we will introduce how to make a lemon sour cocktail.
Let’s make a lemon sour cocktail!
Sapporo CHU-HAI 99.99 Clear Dry(350ml), 2 lemons, 5~10 ice cubes.
Knife, Cutting board, Bar spoon, Glass, Plastic wrap, stainless steel tray
①Store a Sapporo CHU-HAI99.99 Clear Dry in the refrigerator the day before.
②Slice 5 to 10 slices of lemon with a width of about 3~4mm.(Depending your glass size, the number of lemon slices will change so slice as many as you need.) If there is excess lemon, we will use it later. If not, slice up another 1/4 lemon.
Overlay plastic wrap on a tray. Put the lemon slices in a straight line with a little overlap. After arranging them, wrap the sliced lemons with plastic wrap and freeze them in the freezer for 2 or 3 hours.
Peel off the frozen lined lemons from the plastic wrap and put them into a glass. Put some ice cubes in the glass, too. Then pour an appropriate amount of Sapporo CHU-HAI99.99 Clear Dry into the glass.
Finally squeeze in the lemon juice and mix it once or twice with a bar spoon. Your lemon sour cocktail, which has a fresh lemon scent and refreshing sourness, is now complete! It's soooo tasty!!
If you feel the taste is too dry, we recommend applying a little honey to the sliced lemons before freezing them. We recommend honey because it is lower in calories and richer in vitamins and minerals compared to sugar.
